Maytag Refrigerators

Amana, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Maytag refrigerators – what do these brands have in common? You guessed it – they were all part of Maytag Corporation, which in 2006 became part of Whirlpool.

Maytag as a Whirlpool brand is a major player in the bottom freezer refrigerator section of the market. Maytag was among the first to introduce cabinet depth and French door models with external ice-and-water dispensers.

Maytag is also known for its commercials and print advertisements, featuring Ol' Lonely, or "the lonely repairman" - a Maytag repairman, who, since Maytag appliances do not break down, has nothing to do with his days...Ironically, in March 2009 Maytag announced a voluntary recall of about 1.6 million refrigerators of Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef and other Maytag brands due to faulty compressor switch relay, which can overheat and ignite.

While this is bad news (and will certainly hurt Maytag Corporation), this things do happen from time to time and no consumer product (just think about car recalls) is immune to such problems. We think you should not judge a company by the fact that the incident happened, but by how they are dealing with it (in this case, it is probably not even Maytag’s fault, but the faulty component supplier’s).The refrigerators in question are side by side and top freezer models, manufactured between 2001 and 2004 and the company is offering a free in-home repair. Full details can be found on Maytag web site.
