Side by Side Refrigerators

Side by side refrigerators are the most popular type by far and are perceived as "American refrigerators" in other parts of the world.

Most have two doors, with slightly narrower freezer compartment on the left and refrigerator on the right. Some models have four doors and hence four separate compartments. The four door models are a bit more expensive, but since each door is smaller, they do not let as much cold air escape each time you open a door as the two door models do, which helps maintain a more constant internal temperature and also saves some energy. On some four compartment models, you can even individually select each compartment to act as freezer or refrigerator.

Nearly all side-by-side refrigerators have through-the-door water dispensers and ice makers. This feature makes them more expensive and, sadly, also less reliable, since through the door ice makers and water dispensers are the most repair prone parts of any refrigerator.

They are suitable for most kitchens. Due to their relatively narrow doors, the small door swing is suitable for narrow kitchens also. While the door swing is comparable to French door type, the shelves in both freezer and refrigerator parts are narrower. On the up side, they are less expensive than comparable French door models and you can put more frequently used items at eye level in both freezer and refrigerator compartments.

Pros:

  • cheaper than comparable French door models
  • small door swing due to narrower doors (compared to top freezer or bottom freezer models)
  • frequently used items at eye level in both freezer and refrigerator compartments
  • through-the-door ice maker and water dispensers on most models

Cons:

  • have narrower shelves than French door or top freezer and bottom freezer models
  • more expensive than top freezer or bottom freezer models
  • reliability issues of through-the-door water dispensers and ice makers
